Examples of Work

Lamplight, October 2023
During 2023, I was lucky enough to be funded by Creative Scotland to attend STAGES, an extended songwriting residency at Moniack Mhor in the Scottish Highlands. I co-wrote this song with Shirley Barr, following some dark conversations about the state of the world. We wanted to write something about the importance of human connection and compassion, that would hopefully make listeners feel comforted during these troubled times. Vocals, guitar and harp by me. Piano by Boo Hewerdine. Recorded and mixed by Jamie Savage at Chem19 Studios.

Seabirds Calling, November 2020
The starting point for a compilation album of extinction/endangered species songs I co-curated (with artist Laura Luna Castillo), raising funds for Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, and Umbral Axochiatl in Mexico City. Music, lyrics, vocals and instrumentation (guitar, violin, harp, harmonium) by me. Recorded by John Cavanagh in Glasgow.

The Death of Mrs Baird of Cambusdoon, February 2020
An evocation for the remains of an old rambling estate near where I grew up. A challenge to myself to create an entirely acoustic recording with no sonic manipulation at all. All reverb is naturally occurring. Music, vocals and instrumentation (violin, harmonium) by me. Bass clarinet and recorded by John Cavanagh in Glasgow. Lyrics drawn from a poem by Ebenezer Smith, published 1871.

Bell Lungs improvised livestream, December 2020
Music, vocals and instrumentation (alto glockenspiel, violin, tiny piano, microbrute) by me.

Gradients of Night, November 2021
A rumination on the domestic drudgery of lockdown. Music, lyrics, vocals and instrumentation (guitar, violin, synth, bells) by me.

Wolves Behind Us, February 2019
Inspired by Joan Aiken’s book The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Music, lyrics, vocals and instrumentation (guitar, violin) by me. Recorded by John Cavanagh in Glasgow.

Bell Lungs improvised livestream, May 2020
Music, vocals and instrumentation (kalimba, clarinet, lyre, violin) by me. Recorded by John Pooley in Glasgow.
